Some offices reduce energy by turning off their lights or having four day workweeks. A simple neglected fact is that companies typically spend between 2-6% of their revenue on output of paper based information. Greening your copier is essential to reducing your carbon footprint.

Energy:

Computers, printers, fax machines and copiers consume energy even while they are not in use. Most companies leave their copiers on around the clock.

According to a table found on www.APS.com, the cost of a copier that is left on 24 hours a day for 7 days a week costs approximately $224.00. If the copier is shut off at night it will cost approximately $80.00. If you use an Energy Star copier, the average cost for leaving it on 24 hours a day for 7 days a week costs $140.00.

The Energy Star feature in a typical copier can reduce that machine’s annual electricity cost by as much as 60%.

 Water & Trees:

Most employees print items off of the internet on one sided paper, read it once and throw it out. A copier with fast and reliable duplexing (double-sided copying) can reduce office paper use by 25 percent or more, saving money in the process (Solid Waste Management Coordinating Board and the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, April 2000). Also, reducing paper use can contribute to reduction in natural resource consumption as well as in energy used to create paper.

For the production of one piece of A4-paper 10 liters of water is used. Imagine how much water you could save by having a duplex copier?

 If all copiers sold in the United States were Energy Star-labeled and set to automatically default to double-sided printing, the amount of paper used could be reduced by more than 200 billion sheets. 1 million tons of paper would be saved, which is enough to save 20 million trees.

Toner:

Toner scammers will pose as a harmless third party vendor. During their first call they will imitate a concerned vendor who is checking to make certain that everything is fine with toner levels. They may ask questions such as, “Are you low on toner?” or propose offers such as, “We have a special on toners and we see that you use a lot of toner.” They often make it seem that they know your print volume.

Tips to avoid becoming a victim of toner scammers:
1. Avoid giving out your credit card number until you receive a faxed or e-mail invoice. If you receive bills on items that you did not order, you are not obligated to pay, even if the product was already delivered.
2. Inspect your bills and be sure they correspond with the vendors and the prices you were quoted. Do the same when you receive the shipment.
3. Have a designated purchasing person on staff and train new employees to the position.
4. All toners from EIS are marked with our company name.

Remember, EIS staff will never call to ask you if you need toner. If you have elected to not be on our automated system, we ask that you call us with a meter reading to receive additional toner.
